Full player box from T102 Sports Now (Bob Lipsky). Team totals Berwick 107 rush / 54 pass / 161; Pottsville 135 / 157 / 292. Times Leader lists the late Escobar score at 4 yards; CV, RH, and T102 all say 3.
Gameday at Veterans’ Memorial. The Week 5 capsules finally landed overnight and Thursday afternoon, and every one of them leads with the same question.
Brady Cleaver ran for 206 yards and two scores in the 22-12 loss to Wilkes-Barre Area, then left on his last carry and missed the final four minutes. The Times Leader’s John Erzar Week 5 board puts that injury front and center in the Berwick–Pottsville capsule. The Republican Herald’s Dylan Callaghan-Croley Gameface says Berwick has taken quite a few injuries, Cleaver included, and that it will play a major factor Friday. Pottsville left Blue Mountain banged up too — Tide quarterback Andrew Allen’s status is unclear. If both starters sit, it becomes a backup-quarterback night for two programs trying to finish the first half clean.
The series numbers are old and lopsided. Berwick leads 31-11 (Citizens’ Voice has it 31-11-3). Last meeting was Berwick 27-0 in 2015. First meeting was 1930. Mike Brennan, the former Hazleton Area coach, is in Year 3 at Pottsville. The Tide are 1-3 after a 44-14 loss to Blue Mountain; their only win is 20-19 over Pleasant Valley. Erzar’s bottom line is blunt: even if Cleaver does not play, Berwick should still have enough.
Steve Bennett’s Citizens’ Voice Gameface packages the same matchup with the season totals. Cleaver leads the Dawgs with 567 rushing yards and eight touchdowns at 11.3 a carry. Gavin Galutia has 187. As a team Berwick is at 996 rush yards and 7.2 per carry. The 12 points against Wilkes-Barre Area are the fewest the Dawgs have scored in a game this season. Galutia is the Berwick name on the Voice’s Week 5 players-to-watch list — 187 on 32 carries, 5.8 a clip, two scores, and 11 yards a catch. The Republican Herald’s watch list puts Shay Strencosky up for the Tide: 165 rush, 150 receiving, four touchdowns, plus 138 kick-return yards.
Television is still elsewhere. FOX56 is Lake-Lehman at Hanover Area. Radio is Doyle and Ulicny on GOAT Rocks / WHLM. Kick at 7. Read the Times Leader, the Voice, and the Republican Herald for the full boards.
