Final at Charley Trippi Stadium was Berwick 36, Pittston Area 17. The Times Leader and Citizens’ Voice posted the full Friday night write-ups, so the scoreboard finally has a box next to it.
The Patriots punched first. Lucas LoPresto took the opening kick 84 yards. Brayden Cleaver answered with an 85-yard touchdown run. Santino Capitano scored from five, Kayden Bailey got the two-point run, and Caleb Yost hit a 27-yard field goal before the half. Halftime: Pittston Area 14, Berwick 10.
Then Gavin Galutia flipped it. He capped the opening drive of the third with a 31-yard touchdown run. Sam Augustine answered with a 24-yard field goal. Moments later, after Capitano left with a throwing-shoulder injury on a scramble, Galutia stepped in front of a fourth-down throw from backup Santino Salvo and went the other way for the game-breaker. The Times Leader box has that interception return at 97 yards; the Voice has it around 92. Either way, it was the lead Berwick did not give back.
Cleaver punched in from a yard in the fourth. Landon Zapata finished a late drive with a short touchdown. The Dawgs scored the game’s final 19 points.
The Times Leader box is the traditional numbers: Cleaver 10 carries for 163 and two scores, Galutia 16 for 124, Zapata 9 for 57, Berwick 39 rushes for 361 and 18 first downs. Passing stayed light — Cleaver 5 of 10 for 39 with an interception. The Voice has Cleaver around 162 rushing and Zapata closer to 76; those are their Friday night figures next to the same final.
It was not clean. The Voice had Berwick flagged 16 times and, for the second week in a row, surrendering a touchdown on the opening kick return. C.J. Curry told the paper to enjoy the win because Monday would collect.
Season is 1-1, 1-0 in conference. Next is Wyoming Area on Friday at Crispin Field. Full write-ups are linked in the papers list (paywalled).
